The Thoughts Behind the $6,300 Model Call: What Shelbi Lee Was Really Thinking
Apr 28, 2026Last week I broke down Shelbi Lee's step-by-step model call process that generated $6,300 in sales from three clients in a single month. The landing page, the application form, the screening questions, the phone call — all of it.
This week I want to talk about something that doesn't get enough attention.
The thoughts underneath the strategy.
Because here's the thing. You could take Shelbi's exact process, follow every step, and still get completely different results. Not because the system is flawed. Because the belief driving it is.
A strategy without belief won't work. And this episode is proof of what happens when you have both.
The Most Important Thought She Had
Before Shelbi built anything, before she designed her application page or wrote her screening questions, she said this:
I feel confident in where this process is taking me.
That's it. That's the foundation. She believed it was going to work before she had a single data point to prove it.
This matters more than most people realize. When you believe something is going to work, you build it differently. You communicate more clearly. You make decisions faster. You stop second-guessing yourself at every turn. And the people on the other side of your process feel that certainty — even if they can't name it.
Confidence isn't something you earn after results. It's something you decide before them.
The Question That Unlocked the Whole System
Shelbi heard another photographer talking about how she structured her book project applications. And instead of thinking that's interesting, she asked herself something different.
Why can't I use a similar process for model calls?
That one question led to the entire system. And it's a question worth borrowing. When you're inside a community learning from other photographers, you're going to hear a lot of approaches that weren't designed for your specific business. The instinct is often to dismiss what doesn't immediately fit. Shelbi's instinct was to ask how she could make it work for her.
That curiosity plus confidence is a powerful combination.
Every Step Was a Decision
When I went back through Shelbi's post looking for the thoughts beneath the strategy, what I found over and over again was decisiveness.
This is how I'm going to do it. This is what I'm offering. This is who I'm looking for. This is who's out.
She didn't hedge. She didn't leave things open for interpretation. She made a decision and then built everything around it with total clarity.
Her application form is a perfect example. She said she had a handful of questions that do the heavy lifting for her. On the surface that sounds like a practical statement about form design. But underneath it is a much more powerful thought: I have decided what matters and I have built a system to handle it for me.
That's not just efficiency. That's belief in your own judgment.
"I Am a Genius"
When Shelbi described her application form as invaluable, the thought running underneath that statement is this: I figured out how to communicate exactly what I offer, what clients should expect, and what they should not expect — and it works.
In other words: I know what I'm doing.
Most photographers would never say that out loud. But the ones getting results are thinking it. And when you think that way, you build things that actually work. You create systems you're proud of. You show up to client interactions with a completely different energy.
You don't have to be arrogant about it. But you do have to believe in what you've built.
The Thought That Explains Everything
Here's the sentence from Shelbi's post that I think is the most important thing in this entire two-part series.
People who want me are excited and they are going to spend.
She wasn't hoping her vetted clients would invest. She wasn't crossing her fingers going into reveals. She knew. She had made a decision about who she was selecting and what they were going to do, and then she showed up to every interaction from that place of certainty.
And then — no surprise — they spent.
This is not magic. It's not luck. When you believe your clients are excited and ready to invest, it changes how you talk to them, how you present your work, how you handle questions about pricing. The whole dynamic shifts.
Most photographers approach a sales conversation hoping for the best. Shelbi approached it knowing.
Which one are you doing?
Clear Communication Comes From Clear Decisions
There's a moment in the episode that really stuck with me. Shelbi posted that applications were required for consideration and that comments and DMs wouldn't cut it. Simple, direct, no wiggle room.
That kind of clear communication is only possible when you've already made the decision and you're certain of it. When you're wavering, your language wavers too. Clients sense uncertainty the same way they sense confidence — they just can't always name it.
Shelbi had decided. So she communicated clearly. And clear communication attracted the right people and repelled the wrong ones before she spent a single minute of her time.
Strategy Plus Belief Is the Combination That Works
Shelbi's $6,300 month wasn't just a result of a smart application form or a well-structured phone call. It was the result of a woman who made decisions, believed in her process, and showed up with certainty at every step.
Her system might not work for your business exactly as she built it. But her thoughts? They work for everyone.
If you're running strategies that aren't producing results, it's worth asking a harder question than "is this the right tactic?" Ask yourself what you actually believe about it. Do you believe it's going to work? Do you believe your clients are ready to invest? Do you believe you've built something worth what you're charging for it?
Because the answers to those questions are showing up in your business whether you realize it or not.
